12 Heavens Hair Comb
This powerful statement hair comb, or Heru, features hand-cut stylised feathers representing the Maori belief in the 12 heavens of the cosmos.
In Maori cosmology there exist 12 heavens, stretching from the great sky father, Ranganui, to the uppermost heaven Te Toi-o-nga-rangi. Beyond the 12th heaven exists the great and endless supreme being Io.
Legend tells of an invitation sent to earth by the God Rehua in the form of a simple pure white bird named Manutea. Manutea sought out the God Tane, originator of mankind, to summon him to climb the 12 heavens and retrieve the sacred baskets of knowledge.
Upon Tane accepting this invitation, Manutea returned to Rehua who rewarded him for his bravery in navigating the 12 heavens by colouring him black to represent the great void. He also added white tipped feathers to his tail, to a total of 12 to represent the heavens he had bravely journeyed through to reach Tane. Upon Manutea's return to the earth he was renamed Manu Huia and became the most sacred of all birds to Maori.

This piece is part of the New York Collection and was showcased at FlyingSolo, New York Fashion Week 2020
This collection celebrates the bravery of our collective ancestors who honoured the deep pull of adventure and exploration beyond their known world. No matter where in the world your blood-line journeys back to, our ancestors all chose to seek new shores and lands beyond their view, past the horizons they could see.
In this world of 2020, we experience a world that has contracted and closed down. It is a world that is dominated by fear of the unknown, anxiety about a future that we cannot see nor control. The New York collection takes that fear and turns it into intrepid curiosity.
Borrowing from those who come before us, this collection reminds us that the world is still beautiful, that it is full of opportunity to grow and learn and add value. Each piece offers us strength in adversity, freedom in confinement, courage to trust that the wind beneath our wings will not fail us.
Let us seek adventure, be intrepid and curious. Let us be resilient and brave; let us have hope!
"Hope” is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the wordsand never stops at all.
And sweetest, in the Gale, is heard. And sore must be the storm. That could abash the little Bird, that kept so many warm.
I’ve heard it in the chillest land, and on the strangest Sea.Yet, never, in Extremityit asked a crumb of me.

I am unafraid of being afraid and I always look for new ways to express my passion, my purpose and follow my unique pathway. I honor the bravery, wisdom and intrepid spirit of my ancestors as they ventured far from home shores to expand their world.
I trust in the presence of a universal wisdom to set me free and help me find my own perfect pathway. I follow the stars, the sun and the moon who guide me on my pathway. I navigate the ocean waves, winds and currents just as my ancestors did, drawing a map that others may follow to explore the world and their own unique place within it.
