The toki is one of the oldest and most recognised symbols in Māori design, carried as a mark of strength, courage, and the quiet leadership of doing the hard thing anyway. Through its centre runs a pierced mangōpare lattice, a traditional kōwhaiwhai pattern, representing the hammerhead shark, which never backs away from a fight and only strikes harder when it changes direction. Together, the two symbols carry a single idea: real strength isn’t standing still, it’s the courage to move.
This toki is available in two colourways, red and bone white. Red carries the meaning of whero, Te Whei Ao, the realm of becoming and being, connecting us with Papatūānuku, our Earth Mother, and the life force she sustains. Bone white reflects mā, the colour of light and Te Ao Mārama, the world of awareness, where we live, see, and come to understand all that is.
3D printed individually in PLA, the toki pendant has a strong yet comforting feel in the hand, with the mangōpare design pierced right through so light shows through the pattern itself.
Each piece is hand-finished, wrapped with a traditional binding and adjustable braided cord, and made to order in small batches in Christchurch, Aotearoa. You can choose from a traditional black binding or a contrasting colour, warm cinnamon brown for bone white and soft natural linen for red. The reverse of each toki will have slight variations between prints which are a natural feature, making your particular treasure unique.
Your toki has a soft satin finish and subtle wood grain texture. The longer you carry it, the more it becomes yours: proof that resilience isn’t something you just have once, it’s the courage you keep choosing, time after time.
