Description
Elegantly crafted to tell the traditional creation story in Māori cosmology, these handmade beaded earrings capture the sacred moment of separation between Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) and Ranginui (Sky Father); the Celestial Divide. Meticulously woven with red, black, and white beads, each pair symbolises the primordial forces of creation and the transformative light of existence.
These earrings are individually handcrafted from 2mm glass beads and brass or stainless steel hoops. They measure approximately 7cm long and are finished with stainless steel earhooks.
The red beads represent Papatūānuku’s nurturing earth, the black beads embody Ranginui’s vast sky, and the white beads illuminate the sacred space of light and potential born from their separation. Suspended from delicate gold-toned hoops, these earrings are more than an accessory – they are a wearable narrative of cosmic balance, pain, and renewal.
The Story of Light and Separation
Wear these earrings as your reminder of the growth that emerges from challenging moments of life. In the traditional Māori creation story, Mother Earth, Papatūānuku and Father Sky, Ranginui were lovers and eternal partners. Their cosmic embrace was so strong that not even light could pass between them. Their children grew tired and angry with their world of no space or light. Eventually Tāne Mahuta, god of the forest and all it’s living things, courageously pushed his parents apart and separated them for eternity. Despite their agony at being separated, all life arose from the gap that was created and was filled with light and potential.
In the story of the separation of Papatūānuku and Ranginui we can find a lesson about finding strength in difficult life transitions. We discover the light of understanding that emerges from pain – a testament to the wisdom that separation can lead to new beginnings, that darkness and light are interconnected, and that every challenge holds the potential for profound transformation.
